Kimberly’s Top 5 Experiences Working for the Belle of Louisville

by Kimberly Alonzo, Content and Programming Intern

Working at the Belle of Louisville Riverboats has been nothing short of a dream come true. Every day feels like an adventure, and I have had some unforgettable experiences that have made this job truly special. Here are my top five moments that have defined my time here.

1. Ringing the Bell on the Belle of Louisville for My First Ride

There is something magical about your first ride on the Belle of Louisville. For me, the highlight was ringing the iconic bell. Standing at the bow, feeling the history and tradition of the riverboat beneath my feet. Thank you, Matt., The sound of that bell still brings a smile to my face, reminding me of where it all started.

2. The People – A Fantastic Work Environment

The Belle of Louisville is not just a boat; it is a community. The people I work with have made this job a joy. From the warm camaraderie of my fellow crew members to the friendly banter with the passengers, the work environment is incredibly supportive and uplifting. Everyone is passionate about what they do, and it is contagious. Whether we are sharing stories, laughing together, or helping each other out, the people here feel like family.

3. Learning and Talking with the Captains in the Pilot House

One of the most enriching parts of my job has been spending time in the pilot’s house with the captains. Their knowledge and experience are astounding. They have taught me so much about the river, the mechanics of the boat, and the art of being a good captain. The stories they share, ranging from humorous anecdotes to thrilling tales of navigating, are always fascinating. Each conversation is a lesson, and I am grateful for every bit of wisdom they have imparted.

4. Experiencing the Unique Atmosphere of Each Cruise

One of the most captivating aspects of working for the Belle of Louisville Riverboats is the ever-changing nature of each cruise experience. No two cruises are alike, and that is what makes this job so exhilarating. From themed events to special occasions, every cruise brings its own energy and excitement.

5. Learning the History of the Boats

The Belle of Louisville Riverboats are both a floating piece of history, and learning about their past has been a highlight of my job. Every corner of each boat has a story, from the construction and early voyages to the role they played in the community over the decades. Delving into the history of the Belle and the Mary has given me a deep appreciation for their significance. It is a privilege to be a part of preserving and sharing this history with our passengers, connecting them to a bygone era of river travel.

Each of these experiences has enriched my time at the Belle of Louisville, making it more than just a job. It has been an adventure, a learning journey, and a chance to be a part of something truly special. I cannot wait to see what other memorable moments lie ahead on the river.
