The Belle of Louisville has changed her appearance and use through the years to accommodate changes and developments in the nation's transport system. Her original role was that of a packet boat, transporting animals, cotton, whiskey and various cargo between ports. With the development of the railroad system and, later, trucking and the nation's system of highways, the Belle adapted to a new role as an excursion boat. Her ability to adapt is the reason she is still cruising the river today.
